Illustrating the ABCs in the visual lexicon of Soviet propaganda this image depicts factories, chimneys, airplanes, warships and tanks. While this familiar imagery was employed in countless photomontage posters, here it is presented in a purely illustrated style. The unknown artist skillfully uses the red and the black within the image to delineate the composition, creating dynamic, opposing diagonals (the black of the sea, and the flight path of the planes). In many ways a dirty little secret, as it seems to support the basest aspects of capitalism and consumerism, the Soviet government relied on a lottery to raise money for a variety of different causes.
